Take Control of Your Family
You've been anxiously awaiting this time of year. No homework, no packing lunches, and no frantic dash to get everyone out the door on time. But, the novelty is starting to wear off and the “I’m bored” chants are soon to ensue. If you’re going to enjoy summer vacation, least of all survive it, you need a plan!Believe it or not, your kids are not conspiring against you! It's a tricky time of year. A slower pace feels great but abandon your regular practices too much and things get dicey. Your family can persevere these challenges with routine, consistency and a lighthearted approach.
You can promote positive behavior and minimize your frustration. The whole family benefits from a home with routine and consistency. Kids thrive in it! Review a daily plan as well as expectations of their behavior. Stick to the plan. Kids need to know what to anticipate. The day runs smoothly when everyone is on the same page.
You're feeling confident with your plan clearly communicated. Now be prepared for challenges. Kids test boundaries. Don’t take it personally! That's how they learn. Regardless of how many times your son begs, stick to the plan. You've set the expectation. Following through encourages positive behavior.
Have fun with the plan! A constant stream of "No", "Not now" and "Maybe later" isn't your only option. Consider responding to your daughter's incessant requests to go to her friend's house before lunch with a playful approach. Imagine yourself staggering toward your daughter, draping your lifeless limbs on her shoulders, moaning of the hunger pains she is sure to endure without lunch. A playful attack from the Starvation Monster is sure to divert her attention. Finding an extra couple minutes to playfully engage with your daughter creates memories and brings you closer.
Developing a plan and maintaining it through routine, consistency and lighthearted fun will promote positive behavior in both you and your family.
